Jeffrey Baena began his filmmaking career as a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis, working on What Lies Beneath and Cast Away (2000). He later became an assistant editor for David O. Russell, collaborating with him for over a year. After a car accident left Baena with an eye injury, Russell helped him recover by discussing story ideas, leading to their collaboration on four scripts, including I Heart Huckabees (2004) and Meet the Fockers (2004).
Baena initially planned for Joshy to be his directorial debut, but delays prompted him to work on Life After Beth, a zombie comedy he began writing in 2003. Starring Aubrey Plaza, it premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and marked his directorial debut. Baena later directed Joshy in 2016, earning praise for its heartfelt mix of humor and tragedy.
In 2017, he released The Little Hours, a dark comedy inspired by The Decameron, featuring an ensemble cast including Alison Brie and Plaza. He continued collaborating with Brie, co-writing and directing Horse Girl (2020) and Spin Me Round (2022).

On January 3, 2025, Jeffrey Baena was found dead at his Los Angeles home by his assistant. He was 47 years old. The Los Angeles County medical examiner determined the cause of death to be suicide by hanging.
